Research Seminar: Tracing the origins, evolution and epidemic histories of rabies, influenza and HIV

Event Date(s): 04/08/2008

The School of Graduate Studies and Research, Faculty of Medical Sciences will host a research seminar titled “Tracing the origins, evolution and epidemic histories of viruses using phylogeographic analysis: Insights into rabies, influenza and HIV” by Dr. Philippe Lemey on Monday 4th August, 2008 at Amphitheatre B, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt. Hope from 12:30 p.m.

This seminar is open to students as well as staff.

Dr. Philippe Lemey is based at the Laboratory for Clinical and Epidemiological Virology, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.

Recent advances in the fields of phylogenetics and population genetics will be presented at the seminar. Phylogenetic analysis has proven useful in tracing the origin and epidemic history of viral epidemics. In particular it will be demonstrated how inference of the spatial and temporal dynamics of rabies, influenza and HIV evolution can provide important insights into their origins and epidemic histories.
