ACU Webinar | AI & the Future of Science

Event Date(s): 20/10/2026

Location: Virtual

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) invites researchers, academics, university leaders and members of the higher education community to a webinar titled AI and the Future of Science: Redefining the Role of Academics and Scientists in an AI-Driven World.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how research is conducted, from literature discovery and experimental design to data analysis, peer review and scientific communication. While these developments offer opportunities to accelerate scientific discovery, they also raise important questions about the future role of researchers, academic integrity and the responsible use of AI.

Building on recommendations from the ACU Higher Education Taskforce's AI and Digital Access Working Group, this webinar will explore how universities can prepare academics and researchers for an AI-driven research environment while safeguarding creativity, critical thinking and public trust in science.

Key Areas of Discussion

-          AI in Research: Explore how artificial intelligence is changing research practices across disciplines.

-          Future Research Skills: Examine the skills and capabilities academics and researchers will need as AI becomes increasingly integrated into scientific work.

-          Research Integrity and Ethics: Consider the implications of AI for academic integrity, responsible innovation and trustworthy research.

-          Supporting Researchers: Discuss how universities can help researchers adopt AI tools while preserving human judgement, creativity and critical thinking.

-          International Collaboration: Identify opportunities for knowledge-sharing and collaboration among universities across the Commonwealth.
