Location: Virtual
The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) invites academic staff to participate in SoTL Commons, a workshop introducing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., virtually.
Led by Mr. Marc Garcia, the workshop will explore how educators can move beyond traditional teaching practices by investigating questions about student learning, evaluating evidence and sharing their findings with the wider academic community.
Participants will be introduced to a structured framework for conducting classroom-based research and will have the opportunity to join a supported cohort over the next year, share preliminary findings at the Faculty Café in April and develop a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define SoTL and understand its benefits for individual, departmental and institutional development.
- Distinguish between scholarly teaching and SoTL inquiry.
- Identify the key stages of a SoTL research project.
- Develop a preliminary action plan for investigating teaching and learning in their own classrooms.
- Explore considerations for ethical approval.
- Identify opportunities for collaborative research and writing with peers.
