Introduction to the Old Testament in Hebrew

Would you like to hear what Jesus sounded like when he read from the Book of Isaiah in the Synagogue at Nazareth? 

Father Roland Quesnel CSSp will present a short Introduction to the Old Testament in Hebrew on Thursday 12th February 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) Auditorium, UWI St. Augustine Campus. Fr Quesnel holds a license in Theology from Fribourg University, Switzerland, and holds a diploma from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Attendees will also  hear a CD of a Jewish Rabbi reading extracts from the Book of Amos and receive a free booklet with the texts that will be presented.    

 

 The following is a short excerpt form the beginning of the text that Jesus read in the Synagogue.

  Rúach          Adōnai  ‘alai,  ya’an    mashah  Yahweh  ōtī,

Spirit (of the) Lord      on me so that  anointed  Yahweh   me,

  Le-vassēr                   ‘anawīm   shelahánī,          la-havōsh  le-nishberē-lēv,To bring good news to poor ones he has

sent me, to  bind up the broken-hearted,

  Li-qerō         li-shevuyīm  derōr     we  la-asurīm        peqah-qōah.To proclaim   to captives    freedom and to bound ones open doors.
