Insights from Postcolonial Feminism and Transnationalism

Event Date(s): 28/01/2009

The Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) will host a Lunch Time Seminar entitled “Gender and Development / Gendering Development Thirty-Five Years Later: Some Insights from Postcolonial Feminism and Transnationalism”. This event will take place on Wednesday 28th January, 2009 at the seminar for Gender and Development Studies, UWI, St. Augustine Campus from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. The presenter at this seminar will be  Prof. Marianne H. Marchand of Universidad de las Américas, Puebla, Mexico.

The study of Gender and Development has been widespread among academics, and although Gender and Development issues were reaffirmed in the Millennium Development Goals, much of the originality in the field has been marginalized and excluded from the development (policy) agenda. Instead of arguing that Gender and Development is “dead”, Prof. Marchand argues that it provides the space for innovative and critical thinking about development issues in a transformed and globalised world - in the context of new global realities due to, among other things, migrations and the creation of transnational communities in the new post-9/11 global security regime, which has generated repercussions for the field of Development Studies.
