Dr Judith Rudakoff, playwriting professor at York University in Toronto, will present a free public reading of her play Beautiful Little Lies, at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday 1st February, 2009 at the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) Auditorium, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.
Beautiful Little Lies is set in Cuba and tells the story of a female Canadian writer’s all-inclusive holiday vacation. The play is an eclectic charade between Juancy, a transvestite performer/prostitute, the male tourists he serves and the omnipresent Orishas. This play is directed by visiting artist in residence at Arts-in-Action, Rhoma Spencer.
A developmental dramaturge and playwright, Judith Rudakoff (BA McGill, MA University of Alberta, PhD University of Toronto) has worked with emerging and established artists on four continents. She has been a member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada since 1984. Dr Rudakoff has authored numerous books on theatre, some of which include Between the Lines: The Process of Dramaturgy (Playwrights Canada Press, 2002, coeditor Lynn M. Thomson); Fair Play: Conversations with Canadian Women Playwrights (Simon & Pierre, 1989, co-editor Rita Much) and Questionable Activities: Canadian Theatre Artists in Conversation with Canadian Theatre Students (Playwrights Canada Press, 2000). Her theatre articles have appeared in The Drama Review, Theatre Forum and Canadian Theatre Review.
