Emergence of Arboviral Diseases in Humans

The Faculty of Medical Sciences will host a research seminar entitled “Emergence of Arboviral Diseases in Humans: Dengue, Yellow fever…” This event will take place on Thursday 19th February, 2009 at 12:00 noon, in Amphitheatre B, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Eric Williams Medical Science Complex, Mt. Hope.

This presentation will be made by Professor Scott Weaver, Director for Tropical and Emerging Diseases, Vice-Chair for Research, Department of Pathology, University of Texas Medical Branch.Dr. Weaver’s research focuses on the pathogenesis, ecology, and genetics of arthropod-borne viruses, especially alphaviruses and dengue, and on biodefense including vaccine development. He will speak on ecological and evolutionary factors involved in the emergence of mosquito-borne viral diseases such as Dengue and Yellow Fever in human populations.
