Domestic Violence in Pregnancy

Event Date(s): 22/04/2009

The Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) will host a seminar entitled ‘Domestic Violence in Pregnancy’. This seminar will be held on Wednesday 22nd April 2009 in the Seminar Room, CGDS, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. Violence in pregnancy is a serious and growing global phenomenon. Globally, statistics show that as many as 8% of pregnant women are abused—that is more than 300,000 women per year. The phenomenon is a complex one because violence against pregnant women can start with pregnancy; it can continue with pregnancy; or the pregnancy can be a result of violence.  A with any intimate partner violence, domestic violence is a public health problem and a human rights violation.

The feature speaker for this event is Ms Debrah Lewis (RN; LM; CNM; MSc.) Ms Lewis has been practicing midwifery in the United States and Trinidad & Tobago for the past 21 years.  Since certifying in Gender Based Violence in 2002 in Vienna, Austria, she has been more intimately involved in work in this area.  As founder and Executive Director of Mamatoto Resource & Birth Centre, Trinidad & Tobago, she maintains an independent home birth and birth centre practice; she is also a founding member and Past President of the Trinidad & Tobago Association of Midwives.
