Tracking the Caribbean’s Stock Market Development

Event Date(s): 22/05/2009

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) will host an upgrade seminar entitled ‘Issues in Stock Market Development and Integration with Special Reference to the Caribbean’. MPhil Candidate, Mr. John Cozier, will present this seminar on Friday 22nd May at 10:00 a.m., in the SALISES Conference Centre, UWI.    ABSTRACT

This paper represents a collection of three essays which seeks to examine three aspects of stock market development within the Caribbean. The topics to be discussed include:

a) An investigative analysis of the states of development of the major CARICOM stock markets;

b) A discussion and empirical investigation on the co-movement of stock prices within these markets to examine the degree of stock market integration;

c) Cross-listings and its impact on the CARICOM stock markets.

The purpose of these essays is to provide insight to policymakers and hopefully serve as a basis on which policy can be developed and implemented. This thesis can add to the discussion on the best approach towards its effective implementation. Early findings show that CARICOM stock markets suffer from liquidity problems and a strong preference to debt financing over equity in the determination of financing sources for investment projects.  For further information, please contact SALISES at (868) 662-2002 Exts 2391 or 2392.
