Inaugural Symposium: Current Developments in Caribbean Community Law

The Caribbean Law Institute Centre (CLIC) of the University of the West Indies in association with The CARICOM Secretariat and The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) presents The Inaugural Symposium: Current Developments in Caribbean Community Law.

 

The symposium will be held November 9th – 11th, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

 

The Symposium is an annual high level forum for discussion of current or controversial developments in the law relating to or affecting the Caribbean Community and its Member States.

 

Recent decisions of the Caribbean Court of Justice in its original jurisdiction provide particular fodder for this year’s deliberations by emphasizing:

 

    * The rules-based nature of CARICOM law

    * The importance of compliance by the Community with administrative law principles

    * The role of the Common External Tariff (CET)

    * Competition

    * CCJ Litigation by the Private Sector

    * Nature of CARICOM Institutions

 

Other contemporary developments of equal concern to the business sector and providers of legal services include:

 

    * The impact of the global financial crisis and recession

    * The free movement of goods, capital, skilled labour and service providers

    * Continuing obstacles posed by the Alien Landholding regime

    * Commodity prices

    * Foreign currency trading
