Staff, alumni and postgraduate students of The University of the West Indies (UWI) can now apply for scholarships available in the 2012 Mundus ACP II project led by the University of Porto, Portugal and sponsored by the European Commission.
The Erasmus Mundus programme is a cooperation and mobility programme in higher education, which aims to promote partnerships between European and Third World country higher education institutions by providing exchange and scholarship opportunities. The Mundus ACP II project in particular is a partnership of 20 higher education institutions from African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries and Europe.
UWI is one of only two Caribbean institutions to be named as partners in the Mundus ACP II Project, while European partners include institutions in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Under this special scheme, Master’s and Doctoral students, researchers, academic and administrative staff from The UWI can receive financial support for postgraduate studies, research, teaching and administrative activities at European partner institutions.
There are approximately 12 scholarships exclusively available to students, alumni and staff of The UWI as follows – eight full master’s scholarships, two scholarships for mobility as part of your doctoral programme and two academic/administrative staff scholarships. Applicants must, however, be nationals of ACP* countries.
The Mundus ACP II Project provides for the payment of a monthly scholarship (between 1000 and 2500 Euros, according to the type of mobility), a return ticket, health, accident and travel insurance, and tuition fees to the host institution, where applicable.
Deadline for applications: 15th February, 2012.

Notes: *Nationals of the following Caribbean countries are eligible to apply to the Mundus ACP programme: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. All candidates must not have resided for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of the European countries.

About the MUNDUS ACP II Project
The main objective of this project is to promote cooperation between EU and ACP countries in higher education. In particular this project aims to promote the socio economic development of these countries through higher education cooperation with emphasis in the thematic, priority areas of education and teacher training, medical sciences, engineering and technology, applied sciences and informatics, agricultural sciences, natural sciences and social sciences. This project also aims to promote knowledge transfer and capacity building.
