Call for Papers: Department of Behavioural Sciences Postgraduate Conference

Posted Wednesday, February 18, 2015

Research conducted by the Postgraduate community throughout the three main campuses of The University of the West Indies is diverse, wide-ranging and of a high academic standard. However, opportunities for Caribbean postgraduates to present their work in a conducive conference environment is limited. This two-day conference aims to ‘alleviate the limitedness’ by highlighting the wide range of research on contemporary issues facing Caribbean societies as well as possible solutions and recommendations as viewed through the lens of the next generation of Caribbean scholars – the postgraduate students in the Behavioural Sciences and also from the wider UWI community.

Through research, innovation and practice, the Department of Behavioural Sciences across the three main campuses of the University of the West Indies has made valuable contributions to the development and understanding of the Caribbean region for over half a century and continues to offer critical insight into Caribbean issues, in particular, through our various units – Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Mediation and Criminology and Criminal Justice. Instructively, the Department of Behavioural Sciences (DBS) Postgraduate Conference 2015 titled, “The Caribbean Today: Facing Challenges and Assessing Opportunities through Post Graduate Research”, is an opportunity to make further contributions to the development of the Caribbean region as well as add to the existing body of Caribbean scholarly literature.

In an effort to better understand the challenges in the Caribbean today, this post-graduate conference will offer current post-graduate students, ex-students, researchers, and faculty, across the University and other relevant institutions, the opportunity to present and develop their work. Reports, works-in-progress, workshops, poster sessions, individual papers, and pre-formed panels are all invited on issues related to Caribbean research and practice. Presentations should assess progress to date and lessons learned — the problems and obstacles, as well as successes. Prizes will be on offer for best poster, paper and panel at the conference.

Emanating from the Department of Behavioural Sciences Postgraduate Conference 2015 will be a Conference Proceedings publication containing research material (research papers, essays, reports) from the conference.
