Background:

The Old Yard is an annual showcase and presentation of traditional carnival masquerade in the format of a heritage fair that features the performance and exhibition of traditional masquerade of Trinidad and Tobago in the backdrop of a re-created barrack yard complete with the ‘gayelle’ as center stage. This visual aesthetic is created annually under the Direction of its Artistic Director Camille Harding who seeks to present an authentic, indigenous representation of this historical setting.

The Old Yard seeks to maintain the spectacle, creativity, and artistry of traditional masquerade in the minds of its patrons by taking them on an interactive journey of heritage traditions of the carnival masquerade. Patrons can dance, play, sing along, and even try to replicate the moves of the traditional masquerade with the masters of carnival arts performance.

The Old Yard also serves as a training platform for students in the areas of Festival Management, Production, Performance, Technical Theatre and Visual Arts at the Department. By extension, because of the nature of programming the event has become an annual stomping ground for students pursuing CSEC and CAPE courses for which the traditional masquerade and heritage and are components of the curriculum.
