DLCCS Celebrates Campus Literature Week 2019 - Creating Lasting Words

The Department of Literary, Cultural and Communication Studies celebrates the 21st anniversary of Campus Literature Week under the theme, Creating Lasting Words.

Campus Literature week takes place from March 25 to 29.

Noontime Readings: will take place in The Audio-Visual (AV) Room, The Alma Jordan Library all week. The schedule includes:

  • Monday March 25: Dr. Muli Amaye, Attillah Springer, Celeste Mohammed, Sammarko Lightbourne, Mishael Martineaux
  • Tuesday March 26: Alake Pilgrim; Nadja Nabbie; Alexandra Stewart; Chennel Cupid; Kavita Rajpath
  • Wednesday March 27: Barbara Lalla; June Aming; Rhoda Bharath; David King; Jolie Wong + Gabriel Blackman
  • Thursday March 28: Prof. Elizabeth Walcott-Hackshaw; Garvin Parsons; Dr. Angelique Nixon; Graham Mort
  • Friday March 29: Shivanee Ramlochan; Lisa Allen-Agostini; Vashti Bowlah; Zara Gordon; Judy Raymond; Ira Mathur

Gala Reading and Closing Ceremony: will take place on Friday March 29, 2019 from 5 to 7pm at the Centre for Language Learning Auditorium. (Light refreshments will be served).

The featured Writer-in-Residence is Mr. Pete Kalu.  Mr. Pete Kalu will be the Feature Reader for the Gala Reading and Closing Ceremony.

About Pete Kalu

Pete Kalu is the author of three CYA novels: Silent StrikerBeing Me and Zombie XI. Silent Striker is a semi-autobiographical novel that has as one of its themes how the world of a teen boy, Marcus, changes when he finds himself becoming deaf. Marcus appears as a side character in Being Me which features as main protagonist the neuro-atypical, Adele Vialli, and Marcus is also glimpsed in Zombie XI.

He has also set onto page two folktales for younger children (aged 5-12): Anansi and Tiger’s Stew, and The Singer and the Snorer, tales he has told at countless schools in French and English, within the UK and beyond.

He has an interest in a wide range of Humanities subjects. Currently a PhD researcher in Creative Writing at Lancaster University, he has previously studied French & Spanish (Heriot Watt), Coding (Salford) and Law (Leeds). He worked on the eight museum partnered, Revealing Histories project (www.revealinghistories.org.uk).

He is an award winning playwright/poet with ten published novels to date in several genres, including science fiction, crime and comedy. He has also written for the stage and screen. He was recently named by Speaking Volumes as one of the top 40 Black British writers.
