Certificate in Sign Language Level 1 & 2 Courses - School of Education

The School of Education (SOE), Continuing Professional Development and Outreach Unit offers Certificate in Sign Language Level 1 and Level 2 courses which includes training in Trinidad and Tobago Sign Language (TTSL).

Courses take place at the School of Education as follows:

  • Level 1 – January 25 to April 18, 2020 (Saturdays) | 1 to 4pm | Learn how to introduce yourself, exchange personal information, talk about family and more.
  • Level 2 – January 27 to  May 4, 2020 (Mondays) | 5 to 8pm | Learn how to describe people, things and places, storytelling and fables and other topics.

The cost is $1,200 and the early-bird registration deadline is January 22, 2020. Classes take place at the School of Education.

About the Certificate in Sign Language Level 1 course

The Certificate in Sign Language Level 1 course will take novice signers and signers with some competence through skill development to a level of communicative proficiency where they know how, when and why to say what to whom. The organising principle behind the course is meaningful and appropriate communication with crucial attention to visual spatial grammar and TTSL vocabulary. This course focuses on the communicative purposes of people's everyday interactions with the grammar introduced as determined by the communicative functions. The course will be structured according to the Signing Naturally Curriculum Guide, but will be adapted to address the sign language needs of Trinidad and Tobago.

Topics to be covered in Level 1: Introducing oneself, exchanging personal information, discussing living situations, talking about family, telling about activities and storytelling.

About the Certificate in Sign Language Level 2 course

The Certificate in Sign Language Level 2 Course is designed for signers who are communicatively proficient in introductory Sign Language topics such as those covered in the Level 1 course. This program further extends signers’ competency by focusing on Descriptions and Discussions. The course will be structured according to the Signing Naturally Curriculum Guide, but will be adapted to address the Sign Language needs of Trinidad and Tobago.

Topics to be covered in Level 2: Describing people and things, making requests and asking for advice, describing places, giving opinions about others, discussing plans and goals and storytelling and fables.
