Welcome to The University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus!Welcome to The University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus!

To those of you who are now joining The UWI family, thank you for choosing to be part of this great West Indian tradition. You are a very special cohort of Pelicans, the very first to engage with mainly virtual learning during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. For continuing students, welcome to the new normal. I thank you for persevering over the last few challenging months and I hope that you are ready for another productive academic year.

As we navigate the virtual teaching and learning mode, the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) will continue to provide the required training and support. You are reminded of the resources available at https://sta.uwi.edu/otl/. Here you will find a plethora of training and support services put in place to help you with your online learning experience.

Although you may not be able to have social gatherings, I encourage you to virtually welcome our new students and share advice on how to make the best of their time at The UWI. To our regional students who will be joining us via online classes, we welcome you and can’t wait to have you in person when travel restrictions are lifted.

As the second-largest campus of this regional University, you can imagine there are many important decisions related to the operations of University and Campus life. In this regard, you will find me serving as Chair, Deputy Chair and as a member of several student and staff-related standing committees

As Deputy Principal my responsibilities are dedicated to improving and maintaining academic quality, teaching and learning; and developing and implementing and assessing student services that enhance the quality of the student experience at The St. Augustine Campus. The core group of student services available to you are under the Division of Student Services and Development (DSSD). The DSSD is spearheading the First-Year Experience (FYE) programme designed specifically for first-year students. This year, FYE features a host of virtual orientation activities designed to assist you in transitioning comfortably into UWI Life. To view the schedule of virtual FYE events, please visit the FYE website at https://sta.uwi.edu/fye/.

My Office is the office of last resort for student issues. If you are faced with academic, administrative, financial, personal or sensitive issues which may be affecting your academic performance or student experience, and once you have exhausted all other avenues such as the Office of the Campus Registrar (Admissions, Graduate Studies, Examinations), Department (Lecturer and Head), the Deputy Dean (Student Matters) or Dean, you can turn to my office. Send us an email at Deputy.Principal@sta.uwi.edu or submit your concerns to me via the Student Online System (SOS) available through your student portal.

Although you are studying at The UWI during the COVID-19 pandemic, I urge you to make the most of your experience. Get to know your Student Guild and join student clubs. Now, more than ever solidarity among our student population is critical and the Guild serves as a powerful uniting force for students at a time when students will not always be in close proximity to each other. We aim to produce well-rounded graduates who excel not just academically but are also game changers in society. This is your chance to shine!

Once again, welcome to The UWI St. Augustine Campus. Get ready to change the game, from wherever you may be joining us.

Stay safe and stay connected.

Deputy Principal,

Prof. Indar Ramnarine
