ONLINE WORKSHOP 1

Title: Strategies for reducing reading loss during the vacation period and other periods of extended school closures 

Date: January 26th, 2021 | Free 

Topics to be covered:

- What is school closure reading loss?

- What are the reasons for this phenomenon? 

- Who are most negatively impacted?

- What is the evidence telling us about what works to mitigate against reading loss due to extended school closure?

- What have our teachers tried that has worked (anecdotal)?

ONLINE WORKSHOP 2

Title: When words do not play fair: Strategies for developing reading comprehension using word study and word sorts 

Date: February 9th, 2021 | Cost - $200 

Topics to be covered: 

- The role of structural analysis skills in decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension  

- Exposure to word sorts at the sound, patterns, and meaning level

- Participants will learn how to effectively question students and use language that develops learners' problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the area of word study

Title: Effective teacher/parent talk to build word consciousness

Topics to be covered:

- Establishing effective teacher/parent talk that builds word consciousness 

- Support for word study when working with both novice and experienced sorters 

- Critical principles of word study instruction and questions that guide critical thinking during word study.  

- Comparative analysis of questioning and responses that build students’ ability to notice and to think about words. The session will feature an opportunity for parents and teachers to develop a script to use with given word sorts.
