World Children’s Day 2021: Safeguarding our Children

Posted Thursday, November 18, 2021

The Department of Behavioural Sciences’ Children and Youth Research Cluster (CAY-RS) in the Faculty of Social Sciences joins the global community to commemorate World Children’s Day on November 20, 2021 under the theme, “Investing in our future means investing in our children”. World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s annual day of action for children, by children.

This year’s commemoration is a global campaign to light up the world blue to show support for and raise awareness about child rights. This year’s campaign holds special significance for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago as it also marks the 30th anniversary of the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991.

As we honour children and reflect on the progress made in promoting the rights of children, we are also reminded of the significant work still to be done to ensure the safety, protection and nurturance of children in Trinidad and Tobago and the region.

The Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago joins the Children and Youth Research Cluster in celebrating World Children’s Day and calls on partners in the child protection sector to wear something blue on November 20. The authority notes that while childhood sets the stage for a healthy adult and society, far too often our children are at risk or have been victims of abuse or neglect. The Authority, therefore, reminds the national community that “Child Protection Is Everybody’s Business” (Nichola Harvey-Mitchell, 2021, Director of the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago)

As a form of solidarity with the campaign and support for the commitment to child rights, the CAY-RS would like to encourage staff and students to join the “blue” campaign on November 20: wear something blue or change your profile picture on Facebook, Instagram, or any other preferred social media sites.
