Prevalence and Administrative Data on Violence against Women and Girls

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies with support from UN Women through the Spotlight Initiative Caribbean Regional Programme is offering a massive open online course (MOOC), Gender Analysis of Prevalence and Administrative Data on Violence against Women and Girls. The programme is open to persons who are resident or living in the Caribbean region and are currently employed within the fields of Gender-Based Studies and more specifically Violence Against Women.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This MOOC on Gender Analysis of Prevalence and Administrative Data on VAWG provides learners with opportunities to appreciate historical and contemporary currents that underlie manifestations of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Caribbean societies. The course also strives to clarify basic concepts that prevail in the articulation of ideas dominating discourses and literatures about VAWG on the understanding that such knowledge often features in research inquiries, reporting research findings, and interrogating methodologies and interventions that drive solutions. Gender analyses are important skills that learners need to develop to the extent that related concepts are presented given their centrality in understanding VAWG. Research as a process for gaining and contesting knowledge about VAWG permits learners to address methodological and technical issues akin to research design, data quality and data analysis. While learners are exposed to qualitative research standards for understanding myriad manifestations of VAWG, much greater emphasis understanding the characteristic features of VAWG, attitudes, behaviour, perception, and prevalence drawing upon applications such as prevalence surveys and administrative data sources. National studies such as the Women’s Health Surveys completed in Caribbean societies constitute primary resources that facilitate fuller engagements in practical settings for all aspects of the course. Learners will also have opportunities to gain experience SPSS and R as statistical applications for storing, managing, and analysing data on VAWG. From a practical standpoint, learners are exposed to the generation of the key indicators of VAWG using statistical applications such as SPSS and R.

 

DURATION OF STUDY AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:- The programme extends over a period of three months with approximately 21 contact hours for persons who satisfy the following criteria:

  • At least 5 years of working experience in the field of gender-based violence whether in the public sector, non-governmental organizations or community based organisations..
OR
  • Registered as a student reading for an Undergraduate Degree in Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Gender Studies, Social Policy, Criminology, Developmental Studies or any other allied programme .
OR
  • Registered as a student reading for a Postgraduate Degree in Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Gender Studies, Social Policy, Criminology, Developmental Studies or any other allied programme.
