The UWI Risk Management Policy

Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2023

Last year you may recall my note highlighting that the Risk Management Unit (RMU) was re-established. This Unit is committed to continuously improving the University’s risk management processes and integrating/embedding risk management across the University to enhance its strategic planning and decision-making.

I am now pleased to announce that The UWI Risk Management Policy was approved by the University F&GPC at its meeting held on October 26, 2022. The purpose of the Policy is to provide guidance regarding the management of risk to support the attainment of our strategic goals and objectives.

While establishing the risk management function across our University system is still a work in progress, it is important that we are all familiar with the terminology, roles and responsibilities within our approved Risk Management Policy. The Policy formally establishes our approach for the effective management of risk within our University system—for which everyone has responsibility—and this requires collaboration across all UWI campuses and departments.

Further, the University’s Risk Management Framework and Procedures Manual forms an integral part of this approved Policy, and this will be shared later. The programme of work for the risk management function will also be detailed in due course, a critical element of which is training.

I encourage you all to please take some time to read The UWI Risk Management Policy. You will continue to hear more on the risk management function.

Until then, should you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact the Risk Management Unit (RMU) in the Office of Administration located at Regional Headquarters, Jamaica via email at rmu@uwi.edu or phone at 876-927-2425, extension 8779 or 8933.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maurice D. Smith, JP; CPFEd
