The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies of The UWI, Mona announces a new issue of the Social and Economic Studies (SES) journal themed “Teaching and Learning in the Caribbean.” Teaching and learning are at the core of what the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies does; the same extends to The University of the West Indies at large.

Teaching university students within the context of Caribbean society has undergone many changes and challenges, both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, students are asking more from their university teachers and their classroom learning experiences. Governments, parents, and employers have demanded greater accountability and value from universities and lecturers.

This special issue brings together some of this emerging material, with a focus on the unique needs of Caribbean students, lecturers, and universities. The collection of articles highlights several important themes related to teaching and learning: students' perceptions of teaching, skills developed in the classroom, pedagogical issues related to the quality of instruction and the delivery of knowledge, the classroom environments that are created by teachers and experienced by students, and the sociocultural factors that influence these themes in some way.
