Temporary Vacancies at The UWI St. Augustine

The Health Services Unit is looking for two (2) temporary EMTs to support the Department. Interested persons and members of the public are encouraged to apply for the below temporary job vacancy.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – BASIC/CLERICAL ASSISTANT FOR THE HEALTH SERVICES UNIT

Duties and Responsibilities:

1)      Maintain strict confidentiality of patient matters at all times

2)      Has a basic understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well-being

3)      Has an understanding of body substance isolation and sharps management

4)      Understands basic medical-legal principles

5)      Functions within the scope of care as defined by the policies and procedures of the Health Services Unit and the University.

6)      Attends continuing education and refresher training programs as required by employers, medical control, licensing or certifying agencies

7)      Ensure the vehicle is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management. Maintains familiarity with specialized equipment used by the service

8)      Duties include but are not limited to:

-          Performing an assessment of the patient situation

-          Opening and maintaining airway

-          Ventilating patients

-          Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including use of automated external defibrillators

-          Providing pre-hospital emergency medical care of simple and multiple system trauma such as: controlling hemorrhage, treatment of shock, bandaging wounds, immobilization of painful, swollen, or deformed extremities and immobilization of painful, swollen, or deformed neck or spine

-          Driving of the ambulance

-          Providing emergency medical care to:

-          Manage general medical complaints of altered mental status, respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic reaction, seizures, poisoning behavioral emergencies, environmental emergencies, and psychological crises.

-          Assisting patients with prescribed medications, including sublingual nitroglycerin, epinephrine auto-injectors and hand-held aerosol inhalers

-          Administration of oxygen, oral glucose, and activated charcoal

-          Lifting the patient (be able to lift and carry 125 pounds) and securing in either stretcher or wheelchair and place in ambulance, and/or wheelchair mobilization when needed

-          Constantly assesses the patient enroute to the emergency facility, administers additional care as indicated or directed by medical officer in charge

-          Documents and reports verbally and in writing, their observation and emergency medical care of the patient at the emergency scene and in transit, to the Medical Officer on duty for the purpose of records and diagnostics.

-          Performing ambulance checks monthly or as needed in conjunction with nurse

9)      After each use of the ambulance:

-          Restocks and replaces used linen, blankets and other supplies

-          Cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures

-          Makes careful checks of all equipment to that the ambulance is ready for the next run

-          Maintains ambulance in efficient operating condition

-          Ensures that the ambulance is clean and washed and kept in a neat orderly condition

-          In accordance with local regulation, decontaminate the interior of the vehicle after transport of patient with contagious infection or hazardous material exposure

10)  The EMT-B/Clerical Assistant will be required to:

-          Performs clinical tasks including patient screening – taking vital signs e.g. blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature, height, weight, BMI and urinalysis, pregnancy testing, Blood glucose tests

-          Administer treatment to students as the need arises e.g. superficial wound dressing, and assist with suture removal

-          Assist with arranging appointments with specialist for students who have referred by the Medical Officer

-          Assist and actively participate in outreach and educational programs for the students as required

-          Assist in sterilizing equipment and supplies

-          Assist with maintaining a safe and clean environment for patients and health care team

11)  Follow assigned facility policies, procedures and restraints

12)  Collect and compile data toward the compilation of the annual reports for Medical Unit

13)  Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor

14)  Adhere to the precautions of infectious diseases to prevent overall spread of organisms (Universal standard)

15)  Document patient’s visits on computerized database

16)  Record keeping

17)  Collect and process entrance medical forms

18)  Report changes in patient’s conditions to Registered Nurse accordingly and serve as a general assistant to the Registered Nurse (s)

Education/Training:

Applicants for this position should be knowledgeable of the University’s operations and be familiar with general, standardized EMT routines, medical equipment and multi-purpose clinical machines.

Candidates must possess at least:

-          Five (5) Ordinary level subjects in G.C.E. or C.X.C (General 1,11 or 111 from 1998) inclusive of Mathematics and English.

-          Successful completion of an EMT-B Training Programme from an accredited institution.

-          Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

-          Proof of renewal of certification every 2 years

-          Heavy T Driver’s License

Salary would be fixed within Grade 2 of the salary scale
