The UWI Math Fair & Other Activities

Join the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the UWI Math Fair 2024 on Thursday, February, 6, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. The Math Fair is designed to boost students' interest in Mathematics, motivating them to pursue further studies in the field. This pursuit of mathematics, related studies and its applications holds immense benefits and is vital for the progression and functionality of society.

The UWI Math Fair 2025, themed " Math Quest: A Creative Adventure of Discovery," will take place at the JFK Auditorium, JFK Lecture Theatre, Daaga Auditorium, and Engineering Lecture Theatre 1. This annual event is hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Technology at UWI, St. Augustine. Secondary school students and their teachers; and tertiary level students are invited to attend.

The main objectives of this event are: 

- To allow students to view Mathematics in an exciting way using various puzzles and logic games to increase interest in the field

- To spark enthusiasm for the various applications of Mathematics in real-life

-  To highlight the various programmes and research opportunities available at the Faculty of Science and Technology

Some other fun activities planned:

-          Math Quiz and the Math Feud Competition

The Math Quiz competition gives secondary school students across Trinidad and Tobago a chance to showcase their mathematical abilities in the form of a head-to-head competition against their peers. This year, the competition will also be open to students from all Caribbean countries. 

This event is conducted via an online multiple-choice quiz. 

Open date: Friday 29 November 2024 at 3pm 

Close date: Friday 17 January 2025 at 3pm 

The top two performers in each level (Junior, Intermediate and Senior) are chosen to take part in the Math Feud. The Math Feud is a 3 versus 3 gameshow style competition held live on the day of the Math Fair. The teams each consist of one member of each level

-           Math Creativity

This consists of multiple categories:

  • Oral Expression: Students submit a recording of an oral expression/musical/song on their chosen theme.
  • Art, Craft and Design: Students submit a picture/short video explaining an original drawing/painting on their chosen theme.
  • Meme Cartoon and Comic Strip: Students submit an original Meme based on their chosen theme

Student's submissions are also grouped into three levels (Junior, Intermediate and Senior)

-          Teacher's Game Design

The Teacher's Game Design Challenge is geared towards secondary school Mathematics teachers who wish to design innovative educational games to make math more fun for students. Game-based learning is an active learning technique that uses games to improve student learning. Game-based learning can be achieved through digital or non-digital games and simulations that allow students to experience the learning firsthand.

There are no topics for this competition. Teachers may choose from any topic which they desire.
