FFA Celebrates World Earth Day 2025

Posted Wednesday, April 16, 2025

The Faculty of Food and Agriculture (FFA), The UWI, St. Augustine Campus, in partnership with Hermitage Limestone Ltd., celebrates World Earth Day 2025 on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. at FFA Classroom B, Frank Stockdale Building and then on to the Frederick Hardy Building, The UWI St. Augustine Campus for a short ribbon cutting ceremony of an outdoor space created by Hermitage Limestone Limited, a local quarry undertaking environmental rehabilitation, including reforestation of spent lands and research into using limestone dust as an input in commercial agriculture.

Earth Day is the world’s largest civic observance, celebrated annually on April 22 by over one billion people in more than 190 countries. It was established in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and fellow environmentalists concerned about industrialization, pollution and environmental degradation. Earth Day promotes the sustainable stewardship of the planet for current and future generations.

Given the FFA’s emphasis on renewable energy use in agriculture, urban agriculture and climate-resilient food systems, its integration of research and outreach into practical applications for local and regional agricultural innovation, it is uniquely placed to lead this initiative, partnering with Hermitage Limestone Ltd. which has plans to convert an 88-acre farm into an eco-tourism hub, making it the perfect partner due to its sustainable development goals and community engagement. The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) are also on board as partners in this worthwhile venture.

In order to foster youth engagement and empowerment in all sustainability initiatives, this event also includes collaboration with The UWI student leadership, including the newly elected Guild.

Students are invited to come for coffee and a snack in order to renew their energies for exams and take part in this short but meaningful event!
