Historic Donation of Gérard Besson’s Archive

Posted Wednesday, July 30, 2025

The Alma Jordan Library has received a unique donation from the family of the late Gérard “Jerry” Besson, founder of Creative Advertising, the precursor company to Paria Publishing.

He was a pioneer of advertising in Trinidad and Tobago and is recognized for his creative and culturally insightful advertisements, which serve as significant sociological artifacts. His work was uniquely characterized by his sharp wit and humor.

Handed over by Mrs. Alice Besson and Mr. Dominique Besson, the collection showcases illustrated ad campaigns from the 70s–80s, a time when illustration took centre stage in Trinidad and Tobago’s commercial world.

Among the donations were manuscripts and papers from the era of Creative Advertising which Professor Bridget Brereton helped the Bessons select and curate.

It features work by artists such as Michael King, Peter Sorzano, Peter Shim, and Jerry Besson, and includes campaigns for NIB, FCB, Stag, Matouk’s, and more.

This creative archive is now part of the West Indiana and Special Collections Division, offering rich insights into local advertising, design, and cultural history.
