CETL Workshop: AI and Academic Writing

The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) invites academic researchers, graduate students, and anyone interested in academic writing to participate in a virtual workshop exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and academic writing.

Presented by Dr. Leroy Hill, this workshop examines how AI can be used as a powerful tool to enhance the writing process while deepening participants’ understanding of writing as a social practice. Participants will explore how AI can be strategically integrated to support academic thinking, writing development, and productivity, with careful attention to ethical considerations aligned with The UWI AI Policy framework.

Key Themes include:

  1. Writing as a Social Practice: Explore the concept of writing as a discursive social practice, positioning various tools and approaches within the context of developing effective writing habits.
  2. Situating AI as a Tool: Discover how AI can be integrated into the writing process as a valuable resource, drawing from emerging research and best practices.
  3. AI Roles in Writing: explore the diverse roles AI can play in assisting academics with their writing, thinking, and overall practice.
  4. Working with AI Prompts: Learn effective strategies for crafting prompts that yield the most relevant and helpful AI responses.
  5. Ethical AI Usage: Explore the ethical considerations of using AI in academic research and develop key criteria for responsible AI implementation.

Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Analyze how specific contexts shape academic writing.
  2. Utilize AI tools effectively to enhance their academic writing.
