The Society for Tropical Veterinary Medicine (STVM) is inviting applications for the Norval–Young Student Award, a biennial award that supports student participation in the 4th Joint AITVM–STVM International Conference (AITVM–STVM 2026). The award provides a travel grant to attend the next STVM conference and recognizes outstanding student research in tropical veterinary medicine (or work with direct relevance to it).
About the Award
Established in memory of Dr. Andy Norval and Dr. Alan Young, this award honors their lifelong commitment to mentoring and supporting emerging scientists in the field of tropical veterinary medicine and tick-borne disease research. The award is granted every two years and is based on a competitive review of submitted student research materials.
Eligibility
Applicants must be:
- - Veterinary or postgraduate students worldwide who are currently enrolled in a program
OR
- - Graduated less than six (6) months prior to submission
The successful applicant must present a paper based on the submitted abstract at the conference.
Applicants must submit the following items for evaluation:
- Research Summary (max. 3 pages): A complete summary of a completed research or clinical project (Title/authors/institutions; program type; Introduction; Materials & Methods; Results/Final Disposition; Discussion/Interpretation). Submission must be approved by all authors.
- - Abstract (max. 400 words): Prepared for inclusion in the conference program.
- - Two (2) Letters of Recommendation: From faculty or professional members of the supporting institution(s).
- - Application Essay (max. 1 page): Interest in tropical veterinary medicine, prior experiences, and career goals.
- - Biographical Sketch/CV: Include educational background, awards, presentations/publications, and graduation date (if applicable).
Applications will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the STVM Executive Board, with evaluation based on scientific merit, recommendations and the applicant essay. The awardee will be expected to deliver a 15-minute oral presentation at the conference.
