Students are invited to apply for the CariSurg Institute MedTech Pathways Program, a dual-track initiative designed to build Caribbean capacity in cutting-edge medical technology, including surgical robotics, healthcare AI and digital health innovation, that runs from June 1 - August 27, 2026
Students may apply to both pathways but may only participate in one
Pathway 1: Surgical Robotics Research Program (Fully Funded | In-Person in the UK)
A 12-week research experience featuring 4 weeks of virtual preparation followed by 8 weeks in-person at the University of Leeds, with students embedded in active surgical robotics research projects.
Highlights
- - Hands-on research mentorship and international lab exposure
- - Experience in real research workflows (design, testing, data analysis, scientific communication)
- - Strong preparation for MSc/PhD pathways and research careers
- - Available projects include surgical robot sensing tools, minimally invasive interface design, and continuum robot design/control.
Pathway 2: Healthcare AI Training Program (Free | Fully Virtual)
A 12-week, fully virtual program (minimum 40 hours/week) focused on building applied skills in healthcare AI and software development through an industry-simulated workflow.
Highlights
- Build deployable healthcare AI systems and a professional portfolio
- 2026 cohort project: an AI-assisted emergency triage system for low-resource clinical environments (with clinician involvement)
- Preparation for roles in healthcare AI, software, and data engineering
Eligibility snapshot
- Both pathways: CARICOM nationals, ages 18–25
- Surgical Robotics Research: UWI undergraduate (engineering/related) with an interest in robotics/research
- Healthcare AI Training: students with basic programming skills (e.g., Python, SQL)
- Application deadline: March 15 2026
The selection process includes an online technical readiness quiz after applications close; shortlisted candidates will complete interviews (Surgical Robotics) or an applied “Week 0” assessment (Healthcare AI) in late May 2026.
