The Department of Physics invites the campus community to a PhD Seminar for Ms. Nkese Mc Shine on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Ms. Mc Shine will address the topic Assessing Caribbean Station Wind Speed Data with Gridded Climate Datasets.
Interested persons can join in-person in Room 414, 3rd Floor, Natural Sciences Building or via Zoom by clicking here.
Abstract
Global reanalysis data sets have become essential in renewable resource assessments as
they provide complete long-term climate data without gaps and full spatial coverage.
These data sets can be used either in addition to or as an alternative to measured data
where there are scarcities or unreliable high-quality data once they are reflective of the site.
From my previous work, I have shown that there is a lack of high-quality measured data in
the Caribbean, as 86% of the stations were rejected after quality control procedures were
applied and only 28 stations representing 9 islands were identified as having high quality
data. This presentation compares reanalysis data sets with 10 m wind speeds for these 28
stations, to determine a reanalysis data set that best captures the wind speed variability in
the Caribbean
