Posted Monday, May 4, 2026

The University of the West Indies Press proudly celebrates the 20th anniversary of Inna di Dancehall by Donna P. Hope, an influential and widely acclaimed text that continues to shape conversations around Jamaican popular culture and identity.

Over the past two decades, Inna di Dancehall has become a foundational resource across disciplines including Caribbean Cultural Studies, Popular Culture Studies and Music Studies. The book offers a compelling and accessible exploration of dancehall culture, an often misunderstood and marginalized aspect of Jamaican society, through a critical sociopolitical lens.

Drawing on insider perspectives, Hope examines the complex power dynamics within the dancehall space and its relationship to wider Jamaican society. Her analysis sheds light on themes of power, gender and violence, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of dancehall as both a cultural and social force.
