History Fest 2016: Honouring the First Peoples of the Caribbean

The Department of History presents History Fest 2016 with the theme, Honouring the First Peoples of the Caribbean.

This celebration of history will take place from February 24 to March 11 with a host of activities.

Check out the schedule below.

Wednesday February 24:

  • 11 to 11.45am at the JFK Quadrangle | Invocation officiated by Chief Ricardo Bharath & Pyai Adonis of the Santa Rosa Community and Mr. Rabina Shar, Spokesman for the South Western Peninsula of Warao Descendants First Nation of Trinidad and Tobago
  • Noon to 1.30pm at the Alma Jordan Library, 3rd Floor, AV Room | Symposium with the theme Re-thinking the First Peoples’ Identities. Panellists include: Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh (Chair); Dr. Basil Reid; Prof. Sat Balkaransingh; Chief Ricardo Bharath. 

Thursday February 25:

  • 10am to 1pm, Venue TBD | CAPE Workshop for Secondary Schools with the theme, They Came Before Columbus(Schools only). Facilitators: Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh (Chair); Dr. Michael Toussaint; Dr. Claudius Fergus; Dr. Ronald Noel; Mr. Shabaka Kambon. 

Friday February 26:

  • 9.30am to 3pm at the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) Lecture Room |Cultural Nationalism Symposium | Session 1 Panellists: Dr. Claudius Fergus (Chair); Prof. Syed Ejaz Hussain; Dr. Kumar Mahabir; Dr. Sherry-Ann Singh; Dr. Kirk Meighoo. |Session 2 Panellists: Dr. Debbie McCollin (Chair); Dr. Gelien Matthews; Dr. Chandra Mukherji; Dr. Michael Toussaint; Dr. Shalima Mohammad. 

Monday February 29:

Wednesday March 2: 

  • 5.30 to 7.30pm at Arima Town Hall | Public Lecture on the topic, Indigenous Caribbean Cosmology through Material Culture and Folklore presented by Dr. Lennox Honychurch.

Thursday March 3:

  • 10am to 1pm at LRC, Couva | CSEC Workshop with the theme, The First Peoples: Myths and Realities with facilitators: Dr. Lennox Honychurch; Chief Ricardo Bharath; Mr. Rabinar Shar/ Mr. Roger Belix/ Mr. Cristo Adonis; Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh. 

Friday March 4: 

  • Noon to 1.30 pm at the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) Lecture Room | Cross-Campus seminar:  A Loyal Opposition? Trinidad’s Left-Wing Press and World War 2: Race and the American Presence presented by Prof. Emerita Bridget Brereton. 

Tuesday March 8: 

  • 6 to 8pm at The UWI Film Unit, Carmody Road, St. Augustine | Film Night featuring: Film 1: The Garifuna Journey (Director: Andrea Leland); Film 2: The Amerindians (Director: Tracy Assing). 

Wednesday March 9: 

  • 10am to noon at San Fernando Hill | Symposium on the theme, The First Peoples: Their Legacy and Significance to the Caribbean. Presenters include: Dr. Basil Reid; Dr. Madiha Farag; Ms Louise Dover; Mr. Roger Belix/Chief Bharath/Mr. Rabina Shar. 

Thursday March 10: 

  • Noon to 1.30pm at the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) Lecture Room | Claudia Jones Symposium with panellists: Dr. Allison Ramsay (Chair); Mr. Peter Timothy; Dr. Ronald Noel; Ms Atillah Springer. 

Friday March 11: 

  • Noon to 1.30pm at the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) | Cross-Campus Seminar with presenters from The UWI Cave Hill.  Campus.
