UWI Institute of Gender and Development Studies aims to create Personal Hygiene Kits for the Women of Haiti

The UWI Institute of Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), in solidarity with the women and young girls of Haiti recognize the need for gender specific/responsive aid efforts.  In emergency situations, women’s personal/hygienic needs become marginal to the relief efforts intended for the entire population.  In large-scale aid operations these seemingly personalized and private needs often go unnoticed. Women and girls often suffer more health impacts and are more vulnerable to hygiene-related problems as a result of poor sanitation and water shortages.  This frequently leads to infections, unsafe practices and other vulnerabilities.

As such we are seeking your support in gathering feminine protection/hygiene products to address this potential health crisis.

There will be a donation drive on campus beginning Monday 24th January through to Carnival Friday 12th February, 2010.
