For Release Upon Receipt - March 4, 2008

St. Augustine

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the launch of a book entitled Aluminium Smelting: Health, Environmental and Engineering Perspectives (ISBN 978-976-637-345-0). The book launch, which will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Port of Spain on Friday 14th March, 2008 from 5:30 p.m., will be hosted by Professor Brian Copeland, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Professor Clement Sankat, Pro Vice Chancellor and Campus Principal.

Professor Sankat is a co-editor of the new book, along with Professor Mukesh Khare, Dr. Gyan Shrivastava and Professor Chintanapalli Venkobachar, all of the UWI Faculty of Engineering.

The 250-page publication is a collection of research findings, supplemented by extensive data and background literature on smelting processes and related environmental impacts. This publication is a follow-up to the Symposium held on February 10th, 2007 entitled: Aluminium Smelting: Environmental and Engineering Perspectives. Both the local and international contributors to its 14 chapters are all experts in their respective fields. The book presents relevant, up-to-date information on the industrial aluminium smelting process as it relates to the particular circumstances of Trinidad and Tobago and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in general.

Though complex and often technical, the topics are presented in a language and style that are accessible to non-experts. While its specific focus is on aluminium smelting, the collection approaches industrial development from a broad planning and economic perspective, and it is therefore of interest to research institutions and regulatory bodies; environmental consultants, agencies and watchdog groups; practicing professionals or postgraduate students in the fields of planning and development, environmental engineering, life sciences and ecology; and all interests connected to the mining and energy industry, particularly the Bauxite/Alumina/Aluminium industry.

The book is now available in hardback from Ian Randle Publishers (www.ianrandlepublishers.com). Copies may be ordered directly from Ian Randle Publishers at www.ianrandlepublishers.com or sales@ianrandlepublishers.com, or 1-800-744-1114 (toll free from the Caribbean) or 1-866-330-5469 (toll free from the USA).
