The University of the West Indies (UWI) is inviting applications for its prestigious 2013 Open Scholarships. Each year the University awards scholarships to top performing students across the region to pursue undergraduate degrees. The UWI Open Scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, both on- and off-campus, and contributions to books and meals.

To be eligible, applicants must be high school, community or state college graduates applying for the first time to a government-sponsored undergraduate degree programme offered at any of The University’s four campuses. Current first-year UWI students are also eligible to apply for the Open Scholarships. All applicants must be citizens of one of The UWI’s contributing countries (see the list below). The UWI Office of the Board of Undergraduate Studies (OBUS) which manages the Scholarships has noted that nationals of Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago will only receive support for maintenance costs, which will be linked to costs listed in the relevant campus Financial Information Booklets available on each campus website.

In keeping with international best practices, the application process, which is a completely online procedure, requires students to complete a 500-word personal essay outlining career aspirations and reasons for their choice of degree programme at UWI. In addition to meeting minimum academic requirements, applicants must also provide evidence of community involvement and co-curricular activities.

Noting that two Open Campus students received funding under the Open Scholarships 2012 scheme, Professor Alvin Wint, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies reiterated “For the 2013 Open Scholarships programme, we are looking forward to receiving many more applications from students in our UWI-12 countries."

Applications for the UWI 2013 Open Scholarships must be completed online at www.uwi.edu/openscholarship2013 by February 28, 2013 and ALL supporting documents MUST be submitted by March 11, 2013.
