The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the release of Current Themes in Social Psychology (ISBN 9766401950 or 9789766401955), a new book edited by Dr. Derek Chadee, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Behavioural Sciences and published by The UWI Press. The new publication assesses some of the major theories currently being used by undergraduates, graduates and academics in the field of Social Psychology.
Current Themes in Social Psychology, which is co-edited by Dr. Jason Young, Associate Professor, Hunter College, City University, brings together contributors from universities across the globe including the Caribbean, United Kingdom, Israel and Serbia. Donn Byrne, Professor Emeritus at The University at Albany, State University of New York, praised the diverse range of contributions to the publication: “The need for integrating domestic and international perspectives in Social Psychology is finally receiving much broader attention…Social Psychologists and their students can expect to find much of value in this collection of cutting- edge research.”
In its 315 pages, Current Themes in Social Psychology covers a wide range of topics under four main sections: Social Cognition, Affective and Motivational Processes, Interpersonal Processes and Group and Cultural Processes. Dr Chadee focuses on the fear of crime and its enormous social consequences on society. Dr. Young evaluates the effectiveness of Safe Sex campaigns and proposes that, at the point at which partners are on the verge of sexual intimacy, they are often motivated to suppress negative information. The book also presents a new model of sexual harassment that may arise when a man acts on his belief that a woman is attracted to him and in response elicits unwitting sexual behaviour from the woman.
Professor Linda Heath, Professor of Psychology, Loyola University, Chicago applauded the book’s blend of theory and application: “Derek Chadee and Jason Young have done an outstanding job, producing a volume that integrates the theoretical cutting-edge of social psychology with some of the most important contemporary applications. This volume will be a valuable resource for professionals and students alike.”
