ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, launched its annual World of Work (WOW) programme on Wednesday 23 January. The initiative is done in collaboration with Republic Bank Ltd and prepares final-year students for the world of work by providing training in key tools such as writing resumes, preparing for interviews, dressing for success, financial planning, networking and taking part in mock interviews with real professionals, including UWI alumni.
The WOW programme is also highly anticipated by first- and second-year students, who have the opportunity for vacation employment with companies that attend the Recruitment Fair, part of the annual schedule of events.
Since its inception more than a decade ago, WOW has attracted an increasing number of participants, with over 1,000 final-year students taking part in WOW 2012.
Each component of the WOW 2013 programme has been tailored to develop a targeted skill set. The Interview Preparation Workshop, which takes place on Thursday 31 January at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC) teaches participants interview skills necessary to impress prospective employers; at the WOW Seminar (February 2 at SPEC) leading professionals will give advice on financial planning, how to dress for success and how to become an entrepreneur; the Mock Interview sessions (Saturday 23 February and Saturday, March 9 at SPEC) allows students to practise their interview skills with real business professionals and obtain valuable feedback; the Networking Workshop (Thursday, March 14 at the Daaga Auditorium) introduces students to the concept of socialising for business purposes; while the Recruitment Fair brings together a range of companies and organisations looking to recruit students for either vacation or graduate employment. The Recruitment Fair will take place during the final two days of WOW 2013 (Thursday March 21 and Friday, March 22 at SPEC), with day one designated to all returning students and the other, restricted to final-year, graduating students.
