Public Lecture on Implantable Microsystems for the Management of Trauma

For Release Upon Receipt - March 19, 2013

St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – The Faculty of Science & Technology at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine  invites members of the public to a lecture entitled "Implantable Microsystems for the Management of Trauma" presented by Anthony Guiseppi-Elie, Sc.D. of the Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips; Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; Department of Bioengineering and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Clemson University, South Carolina, USA.

According to Guiseppi-Elie "Continued high morbidity and complications due to trauma related hemorrhage underscores the importance of efforts to fully understand the temporal progression of molecular physiologic events needed to bring life-saving changes to practice. The current state of trauma diagnostics emphasizes vital signs and stat metabolic biomarkers." The lecture will explore the recent development of implantable point-of-care (POC) analytical microsystems "to allow for rapid, continual monitoring of glucose and lactate via dual responsive amperometric enzyme biosensors, tissue acidosis via impedimetry and VO2 via voltammetry." Furthermore, these "minimally invasive multi-analyte monitoring biochips have the potential to explore areas still unexplored in the realm of trauma physiology."

The lecture takes place tomorrow, Wednesday 20 March, 2013 from 5:00 to 6:30pm at the Noor Hassanali Lecture Theatre, just north of the Natural Science Building on the St. Augustine Campus.
