Three UWI Lecturers appointed Professor

UWI REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS, Jamaica – The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce that three of its senior lecturers have been promoted to the rank of Professor based on their academic qualifications, research achievements and active involvement in the University community. They are Michael McFarlane, Yasodananda Kumar Areti and Rajendra Ramlogan. 

Professor Michael McFarlane joined the University in 1986 and was awarded indefinite tenure in 2006.  He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2007 and simultaneously held the post of Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care at UWI’s Mona Campus in Jamaica.

Professor McFarlane is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh and the International College of Surgeons, three of the most prestigious organisations for surgeons. He also held the positions of President of the American College of Surgeons (Jamaica Chapter) and the Association of Surgeons in Jamaica. He has made numerous academic contributions to medical literature, which include publishing 38 combined peer- reviewed journal articles and publications, presenting 50 conference papers and authoring seven monographs between 1986 and 2009. Professor McFarlane has also contributed heavily to public outreach initiatives through his involvement with public educational programmes via Jamaican media, on various medical issues such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer and varicose veins.

Before his Professorial appointment Yasodananda Kumar Areti was promoted to the post of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at UWI’s Cave Hill Campus in Barbados in 2009.

In a career spanning almost 30 years, Professor Areti’s academic appointments saw him on staff at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal University, India and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados; these in addition to his UWI lecturing posts.

Among his professional appointments, Professor Areti previously held the posts of Chairman of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners, CME Committee, Chairman of the Pain Management Committee at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Chairman of the Scientific Committee for the 10th UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA) Reunion/International Scientific Conference in 2010. Professor Areti is a prolific academic author, who has published five book chapters, over 40 articles in peer reviewed journals and has presented more than 20 papers at academic meetings and conferences. He has made invaluable contributions to the University, including the development of the Anaesthesia clerkship for 4th year medical students at the Cave Hill Campus and coordinating the Neuroscience 1 Module for MBBS students. Professor Areti has served The UWI for over 20 years. 

Professor Rajendra Ramlogan has lectured in the Department of Management Studies at the St. Augustine Campus since 2001 when he joined the University. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005.

During his academic career, Professor Ramlogan has published six books on Caribbean Law, seven referred journal articles and presented numerous conference papers. His research interests are focused on International Law and the legal issues surrounding the environment and sustainable development. He has also made invaluable contributions to the public sphere providing pro bono legal advice to several national environmental and natural heritage NGOs including Fishermen and Friends of the Sea. Professor Ramlogan has also been actively involved in furthering teaching and learning at The UWI; he has consulted with the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business as well as the St. Augustine Faculty of Engineering and the former Faculty Science and Agriculture. Most recently, in 2011, he was instrumental in developing the coursework and materials on Environmental Law and Policy for the Anton De Kom University in Suriname pursuant to a cooperation agreement between The UWI and Anton De Kom University.
