St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – The Office of Institutional Advancement and Internationalisation at The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine, invites you to a once in a lifetime academic immersion experience to explore contemporary India under the stewardship of The UWI Discovers series.

The three-week academic immersion tour of India, from August 1st - 21st, will provide participants with a unique experience of modern India: its complexity, diversity, history, culture, architecture, food, businesses, language, people, geography and much more. Under the tutelage of academic expert Professor Kapil Kumar, Professor at the Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi, tour participants will traverse eleven Indian cities – Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ahemadabad, Shimla, Aurangabad, Haridwar, Meerut, Mumbai and Cochin.

Now in its second year, UWI Discovers gives participants the opportunity to be immersed in all contemporary aspects of the global powers of the BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Jim O’Neil of Goldman Sachs, who first coined the BRIC designation in a paper titled “The World Needs Better Economic BRICs” stated in 2001 that these nations would become the “world’s principal engine of new demand growth and spending power.” The tours present an opportunity for cadres of present and future Caribbean leaders to be sensitised to these countries and also versed in their uniqueness, cultures and customs. Most importantly, these leaders will be exposed to the opportunities for the Caribbean to engage in constructive partnerships.

Under its current Director, Sharan Singh, the Office of Institutional Advancement and Internationalisation is the focal point for the internationalisation efforts of The UWI, St. Augustine and serves as the major portal between the campus and the rest of the world. The UWI Discovers series, aims to further the internationalisation agenda of the University, an issue central to its new strategic plan for the period 2012-2017.

Campus Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Sankat noted that The UWI has been moving to deepen and expand cooperation with nations through collaboration with higher education institutions in countries like India. This year, the St. Augustine Campus welcomed three Chairs funded by the Government and People of India through the Indian High Commission: a Chair in History; a Chair in Ayurveda Medicine; and a Chair in Hindi.

UWI Discovers India is open to all students, staff and alumni of all Caribbean Tertiary Level Institutions. For further information, interested persons should contact the Office of Institutional Advancement and Internationalisation at 622-2002 ext. 84184, 224-3708 or via email at discoverindia@sta.uwi.edu.
