For Release Upon Receipt - June 6, 2013

St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – The Faculty of Humanities and Education of The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine is collaborating with the National Ramleela Council of Trinidad & Tobago Inc. to host the 1st International Ramleela Conference, July 12-14, 2013 at the Learning Resource Centre, UWI St. Augustine.

Ramleela, an enactment of the glories and life of the incarnation Lord Ram, as he appeared on earth many thousands of years ago, was brought to Trinidad & Tobago by East Indian immigrants 168 years ago. Themed “Ramleela in the Global Village: Traditions, Innovations and Future Directions,” the conference brings together scholarly and practice-based participants with an interest in Ramleela in terms of diversity, values, traditions and community approaches. It will examine the range of religious, community and social  Ramleela experiences that engender positive values in society; examine the concept of Ramleela as a positive aspect of community life; discover the full range of experiences in varying modes of Ramleela presentations in different communities and countries; provide a candid, collaborative environment for leaders, practitioners, innovators and influencers to discuss opportunities and challenges facing Ramleela internationally while sharing ideas and experiences of Ramleela operations in their respective countries. Further, it will begin the process of collecting and archiving written and other materials associated with Ramleela. It is hoped that this forum will stimulate an exchange of ideas; set up and strengthen networks and motivate greater sharing of Ramleela and its issues.

Speakers include Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration, the Honourable Clifton De Coteau; Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism, Dr. the Honourable Lincoln Douglas; UWI St. Augustine Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Clement Sankat and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Professor Funso Aiyejina.

The opening ceremony is at 6pm on July 12, with major presentations and special features running from 8am to 4pm on July 13 and 14. Registration is free and open to all but space is limited.
