ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – The Office of Administration at the Vice-Chancellery of The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce that four of its Senior Lecturers have been promoted to the rank of Professor based on their academic qualifications, research achievements and active involvement in the University community. These are Drs Moawia Alghalith, Rosemarie Wright-Pascoe, Michael Taylor and Wendel Abel.
Professor Moawia Alghalith obtained the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Economics from Northern Illinois University in the USA. He joined the academic staff of The UWI in 2008 and is currently the Graduate Coordinator for the MSc Economics Programme. His service to the University is highlighted by the design of a new course - Advanced Financial Economics - and his contribution to the development of a new MSc Programme in Financial Economics at the St. Augustine Campus.
Professor Rosemarie Wright-Pascoe is a UWI Alum, having obtained her Doctor of Medicine (Internal Medicine) degree in 1990 at the University. Professor Wright-Pascoe has had an integral role in curriculum development at The UWI, Mona Campus, and for her meritorious service in the fields of medicine, endocrinology and metabolism, Professor Wright-Pascoe has been appointed Fellow of several eminent colleges, including the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology.
Professor Michael Taylor is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science and Technology at The UWI Mona Campus. His academic specialisation lies in Environmental Physics. Professor Taylor’s service to the University is underscored by his notable record of accomplishment – he is the director for the Climate Studies Group, Mona, head of the Department of Physics since 2009, has organised several regional conferences and workshops on climate change and is a member of a number of academic boards of The UWI.Professor Wendel Abel is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Community Health & Psychiatry and also heads the Section of Psychiatry at The UWI Mona Campus. His research is focussed on mental health policy and service system development and has been the recipient of several honours and awards for his work in the field. Professor Abel’s contributions to the University include his position as Assistant Editor of the West Indian Medical Journal, Chairman of the Specialty Board for Psychiatry and a member of The UWI Accreditation Committee. It was agreed that the title of his professorship would be: Professor of Mental Health.
These professorial appointments took effect on May 29th, 2013.
