New Deans appointed at UWI St. Augustine

 ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – Two new Deans have been appointed at The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine for the academic year 2013/14. Effective August 1, 2013 Dr Isaac Bekele assumes the role of Dean, Faculty of Food & Agriculture for two years until his retirement on July 31, 2015 and Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, formerly of the Cave Hill campus, has been appointed Dean, Faculty of Law, St Augustine, for a term of four years.  

Dr Isaac Bekele is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Food Production at the UWI St. Augustine. He holds a PhD in Biostatistics from Cornell University; an MSc in Biometry from Reading University and a BSc in Statistics from Addis Ababa University. He has over 20 years’ experience in the area of Environmental studies, providing statistical support to graduate students as co-supervisor or statistical support provider. He has also been a statistical consultant to the Institute of Marine Affairs for an extended period and taught statistics to MSc Environmental Engineering students. His research interests include statistical mathematics, theories in agricultural, biological and environmental fields. Dr Bekele takes over from Professor Carlisle Pemberton, who served as Acting Dean of the Faculty for one year, beginning August 1, 2012.

Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine is an attorney- at- law who holds the Chair as Professor of Labour Law and Offshore Financial Law at the Faculty of Law, University of the West-Indies, Cave Hill campus. She is the Deputy-Dean and the former Program Director of the LLM programme and was awarded The UWI Vice-Chancellor’s Regional Award for Excellence in Research.  

She holds a doctorate from Oxford University, an LL.M. from Cambridge and an LL.B. from The University of the West-Indies. Professor Antoine has served as legal consultant to many governments, including the government of Canada, and to several international and regional organisations. Professor Antoine succeeds Dr Kusha Haraksingh, who served as Dean of the Faculty of Law at St. Augustine for one year, beginning August 1, 2012.

Two other Deans have been appointed by The University for the Mona and Cave Hill Campuses. They are Dr Colin Depradine, who will serve as Dean, Faculty of Science & Technology, Cave Hill and Professor Horace Fletcher, appointed Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona. Both Deans have been appointed for four year terms.
