ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – “Don’t let them get away,” was track and field Olympian Jehue Gordon’s mantra at the semi-finals of the Men’s 400-meter Hurdles race at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Athletics on August 14. He ran a sensational race, copping first place and booking himself a spot in the finals the next day. To everyone’s delight and excitement, Jehue did not disappoint as he blazed to first place once again, emerging victorious.  A student at The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine, Jehue Gordon is enrolled in the BSc in Sports Management degree programme, and plans to pursue a master’s at UWI in the same field. He strives to balance academia and a sports career, a feat to be lauded given the lure of sponsorship and international fame.

Jehue’s athletic career has been a series of successes. He made his international debut at 17 when he ran the fastest time by a junior for his event, missing bronze by a hair’s breadth at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin. He has won medals at the 2008 and 2009 CARIFTA Games, securing Austin Sealy Trophy in 2010, the 2009 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics, and the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships.

He qualified for the World Championships in Athletics for the first time in 2009, and while he did not bring home a medal, he set a national record. Most notably, he competed in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where he placed 6th in the Men’s 400m Hurdles final. His most recent win was at the Herculis meeting in Monaco in July, for the same category, and has again proven his talent by bringing home the gold at the 2013 World Championships.

UWI St. Augustine Campus Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Sankat expressed pride and enthusiasm at young Jehue’s win. He has always had faith in Jehue’s abilities and is confident that his next stint at the Olympics will yield even greater results. The University extends the warmest of congratulations to Jehue Gordon for his victory at the World Championships.
