St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – New students at The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Campus have a lot to look forward to on August 29th and 30th as the campus kicks off its official 2013 orientation programme at The UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC).

Deputy Campus Principal Professor Rhoda Reddock notes that, as a student-centred University, The UWI strongly encourages students to take full advantage of their years at university, from orientation to graduation. The University’s Orientation Programme, “First Year Experience” (FYE) is the official annual student orientation programme of The UWI, targeting all incoming undergraduate and postgraduate students. FYE encompasses all orientation events, including the highly anticipated UWI Life. It is a yearlong experience to introduce all new students to the ins and outs of life on campus and to ensure a smooth transition into University life.

FYE - themed MY UWI L.I.F.E. - encourages students to embrace the tenets of L.I.F.E. – Learn, Imagine, Focus, Engage – which will help them succeed throughout their academic careers. UWI Life 2013 is the official student orientation programme for new students and gives them the opportunity to meet other students, the Campus Principal, Professor Clement Sankat; Faculty Deans, and Heads of Departments.

The first event, UWI Life Support, takes place on Thursday, August 29th, from 6pm to 8pm.  A student’s success relies heavily on a strong support system and this event targets parents, guardians and spouses of all first-year students. It includes a Q&A segment with the Campus Management Team and establishes a preliminary relationship between the support network and the University, equipping them to better assist students as they make the transition to university life.

All first-time undergraduate, evening, part-time and postgraduate students will be welcomed to the Campus at the UWI Life Student orientation on Friday, August 30th, from 9am to 3pm. The event is divided into two sessions: morning (formal) and afternoon (informal). The afternoon “Icebreaker” session promotes camaraderie amongst the new student body and staff. Elements of this session include interactive games, giveaways and live entertainment.
