Filling the void in Caribbean sport and development

For Release Upon Receipt - August 26, 2013

St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – Over the past 15 years, there have been significant developments within the Commonwealth Caribbean in the study of sport and its institutionalisation as part of the system of higher education. Despite these developments, however, there remains a significant void with respect to the body of Caribbean-oriented sport research and scholarship which connects to both the development of sports and the use of sport for development.

To help fill this void, as well as rationalise existing local initiatives in higher education, The University of the West Indies (UWI) and the First Citizens Sports Foundation will host a conference on sport and higher education from January 15-18, 2014, titled "Science, Higher Education and Business: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Sports Studies, Research and Development."

The conference targets academics involved in higher education in sport-related areas, students involved in sports education programmes, other higher education practitioners/professionals and sport administrators. It also further aims to strengthen the network of tertiary level sport educators in the Caribbean region, improve the quality of sport programmes (both academic and physical), and improve tools used to address situations with regards to student athletes in competitive sport.

Interested persons may submit abstracts for consideration for presentation at this conference. Papers should be substantive and may be either qualitative or quantitative, or both, and should focus on one of the following areas:

·         The Sociology of Sport

·         Academic Sport Programmes in the Caribbean

·         Sport Management (funding, marketing, sponsorship, sport law, facility management)

·         Sport Tourism

·         Sport policy (elite vs. mass sport, formulation implementation, evaluation)

·         Governance in Sport

·         Sport and Gender

·         Sport for Development

·         Sport Psychology

·         Sport Science (injury, nutrition, physiotherapy, sports medicine, biomechanics)

·         Student-athletes

·         Coaching

Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted to physed.administrator@sta.uwi.edu by September 15, 2013. Submissions should include the author’s name/s, affiliated institution and contact details.
