For Release Upon Receipt - September 4, 2013

St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – On Thursday September 5, the Department of Management Studies of The University of the West Indies (UWI) hosts a special guest lecture for alumni and new students of the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management Programme. Charles P. Korr, Professor Emeritus of the University of Missouri- St. Louis and Visiting Professor in the FIFA International MA in Management, Law, and Humanities of Sport, will deliver “Sport and the Struggle for Social Justice: the Robben Island Experience" at the Learning Resource Centre, UWI, from 6pm-9pm.

The seminar aims to demonstrate the power of sport to liberate the human mind and change a nation, and to encourage Sports Management students to utilise the skills gained at the UWI/FIFA/CIES Programme to make a positive impact on their local, national and regional landscape.

While the seminar is open primarily to the UWI/FIFA/CIES Diploma Alumni, other sports management students, members of the sporting fraternity and interested members of the public are also welcome to attend.

On Wednesday September 11, the Department holds a special Welcome and Graduation Ceremony for the graduands and new students of the programme. Sport now plays a central role in Caribbean societies, not only as a vehicle for recreation and leisure, but as a key contributor to national economic development and social advancement. The Sports Management Programme, created in collaboration with the Centre International D ’Etude Du Sport (CIES) and under the auspices of the FIFA, helps to buttress that role.

The programme is just four years old, and this year is especially notable, as for the first time the programme will be offered in a blended learning format, i.e. three one-week intensive sessions and then a transition to online learning. Such a format aims to widen the reach of the programme to sports professionals throughout the region, and facilitate working sports professionals. At the ceremony, a FIFA Master Alumna will address the graduates and new cohort.

For more information on both events, please contact Ms. Charisse Broome, Department of Management Studies, UWI, at 662-2002 ext. 83274 or 82105, or Charisse.Broome@sta.uwi.edu

More about the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma This programme places emphasis on understanding the management, marketing and policy development challenges of delivering sports services within today’s complex, demanding and globalised environment. The programme also focusses on the local and regional realities of sport, and caters to the needs of individuals whose undergraduate training is in an area other than Sports Management. The courses and projects to be pursued will facilitate the development of skills and competencies necessary for success at senior management level in sporting organisations in the public, commercial and voluntary sectors.Courses include Strategic Sports Management, Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, Law and Sports, Communication in Sports, Sports Finance, Sports Facilities Management, Event Management and HRM in Sports.

Each year the CIES sends two to three international guest speakers to address the UWI/FIFA/CIES students on one or more of the taught topics. Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma with a B+ average have the option of upgrading to the Master of Science in Sports Management.
