St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – Among this year’s National Award recipients were The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine’s very own Professor Emeritus Ramesh Deosaran and World Champion of the 400 metre hurdles, Jehue Gordon.

As is customary in the commemoration of the nation’s Independence celebrations, National Awards are given to recognize the contributions of citizens and non-nationals who have had a significant and positive impact on the twin-island Republic. Gordon, a UWI Student, is currently pursuing a BSc in Sport Management. He was awarded the Chaconia Medal, gold, for meritorious service to Trinidad & Tobago, promoting the national welfare and strengthening community spirit through Sport. Gordon also won gold today, Friday September 6 in the 400M hurdles at the Belgacom Van Damme Memorial IAAF Diamond League meet, in Brussels Belgium.

Professor Deosaran, an Independent Senator, served as Director of the Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCCJ) and the Ansa McAl Psychological Research Centre at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus. Deosaran was awarded the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for distinguished and outstanding service to the nation and his academic work.

Of special mention is athlete Lynette “Granny” Luces, who was awarded the Hummingbird Medal, Gold, for loyal and devoted service to the nation in Sport. “Granny” Luces, as she is fondly known, is a long-standing supporter and participant at The UWI SPEC International Half-Marathon, which celebrates its 10th Anniversary in October.

This year’s National Awardees also included several UWI alumni.

Campus Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor of The UWI St. Augustine, Professor Clement Sankat, extends heartfelt congratulations to all our National Award recipients.
