St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus welcomed over 2,000 first-year undergraduate, evening, part-time and postgraduate students on Friday August 30, 2013, at the University’s premier new student orientation event, “UWI Life Student”.

During the morning session, students received words of welcome and inspiration from speakers such as UWI Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Clement Sankat; Guild President, Alexander Johnson, and Psychologist, Dr. Dianne Douglas. In his address, Professor Sankat urged students to take advantage of all The UWI has to offer, and spoke of his own experience as a student from Guyana at UWI St. Augustine and how that chapter of his life deepened his love for the Caribbean region. Also in attendance were Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who delivered the feature address and Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Senator Fazal Karim, who also spoke briefly.

Hosts Nikki Crosby and Jason ‘JW’ Williams kept energies high and students on the edge of their seats throughout the day. From morning to afternoon, students were thoroughly engaged and entertained.

UWI Life Student forms part of The UWI’s “First Year Experience” (FYE), the University’s annual student orientation programme. FYE encompasses all orientation activities and is a year-long experience that introduces new students to the ins and outs of life on Campus to ensure a smooth transition into University life.
