UWI Open Campus 2013 Graduation Ceremony

For Release Upon Receipt - October 10, 2013

St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – On October 12, 2013, the Open Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI) will recognise the accomplishments of graduates for the 2012-2013 academic year at an official ceremony in Grenada, at the Spice Basket Cultural Centre.

This year, there are 629 graduands from the UWI Open Campus, 160 of which will attend the official Graduation Ceremony. The commencement speaker is Ms. Joan Armatrading, a St. Kitts native noted for being one of the most talented and eclectic musicians to emerge from England. Joining Ms. Armatrading as an Honorary Graduate of the UWI Open Campus this year, is Mr. Robert Mathavious, who has been described as a driving force in the financial services sector of the British Virgin Islands for many years.

The 2013 UWI Open Campus Valedictorian is Ms. Nikishia Greenidge, a 33-year-old Trinidadian national. As an educator, Nikishia feels that her role is to be an inspiration to her charges, friends, family, colleagues and community. She feels it important to positively affect those she encounters by radiating optimism, strength and determination. As a paraplegic, Nikishia has faced several challenges in her journey towards achieving her goals. Her greatest wish is that those who may view her disability in the context of what she is not able to do instead seek to better understand the social and physical limitations and boundaries currently in existence, and design methods to circumvent these difficulties for her and others like her.

The graduation procession begins at 9.45am and the official programme begins at 10am. Families and friends of the graduands are invited to view the event via live streaming on the Open Campus’s website at www.open.uwi.edu
