UWI SPEC International Half-Marathon supports 10 charities to celebrate 10 years

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – The University of the West Indies (UWI) Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC)’s International Half-Marathon 2013 is not just about the race. To celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, the organisers of the Half-Marathon have embarked on a charitable initiative, where 10 specially-invited persons, dubbed “The 10” will participate in the race, each representing one of 10 charities, and enlisting the public’s support to contribute pledges of $10 in support of their chosen charity.

Supported by mobile telecommunications operator, Digicel Trinidad and Tobago, the public has the opportunity to donate $10 or more to the charities by texting donations to a code assigned to each. The ten charities are:

1)Guardian Neediest Cases Fund:11210

2)Is there not a Cause: 11310

3)Keith Stanford Sobion Foundation: 11610

4)The Trinidad & Tobago Coalition Against Domestic Violence: 11810

9)Arts Insight: 11010

10)Student Bursary: 11710

To contribute to one of the charities, simply send a blank text to the assigned code, with your Digicel handset. Each text donates $10.

Local runners ages 15-19 pay $50, while runners 20 and over pay $100 and payments can be made at any First Citizens branch. The Half-Marathon’s presenting sponsor is First Citizens, and has been since the race’s inception 10 years ago, a collaboration highly valued by both institutions.
